Pre-K uses research-based teaching methods with an emphasis on language development using thematic units, music, songs, poems, and children’s literature to teach reading, math, science & social studies. Even though WAEL Pre-K is a highly academic program, using these methods is more fun for the children, and mastery of these skills is achieved more.
WAEL Pre-K focuses on recognizing shapes, colors, upper and lowercase letters, the sounds of the letters, numbers, coins, color words and basic sight words. Children learn to blends sounds to read words, as well as sound out words to write them. At the end of the year, we focus on writing simple sentences and reading beginner books. Basic addition and subtraction is also introduced in the spring. Biblical stories and a Christian-based curriculum are part of the Pre-K program as well.
WAEL Pre-K takes a variety of educational field trips that relate to the concepts and skills that are taught in class. Life skills such as manners, putting on coats/jackets without adult help, and opening lunch containers, packets, etc. independently are also a focus of the WAEL Pre-K program.
In an effort to maximize school readiness, we are extending Pre-K hours from 8:30-2:30 beginning on August 9th. A large percentage of Wesley’s Pre-K graduates go on to qualify for the gifted program upon entering elementary school.
Heatable lunches will be permitted in Pre-K until Christmas. To prepare for Kindergarten, we ask that no heatable lunches be sent after Christmas.
Please drain fruit cups and place fruit in another container if you are sending them in your child’s lunch.
